What most Independent Artists are missing (and How to Fix it)

Blog · December 8, 2025

Why do independent artists need a flywheel?

Here’s why I am asking you this…

I recently watched a brilliant webinar on growing your newsletter by Pat Flynn, where he explained the concept of a flywheel.

At first, I thought: “I have no idea what that is…”

But it was an eye-opening perspective on why you should build your own.

Very simply, a flywheel is a cycle that, once moving, keeps building momentum on its own.

Not because you push harder… but because each action naturally fuels the next.

For independent artists, this is one of the most powerful ways to turn casual curiosity into a genuine connection with your fans.

What a Flywheel Looks Like for Independent Artists

I sketched a simple diagram to show how your email list (or any community) becomes a self-sustaining growth engine. (forgive my handwriting…)

I took inspiration from the webinar as well as one of my own welcome emails.

Here’s a guided 10-minute practice to help you design your flywheel.

This works whether you use a newsletter, an email list, a WhatsApp group, or even a Discord community.

Discovery – Where poeple find you first

Where do people currently discover you? Instagram? TikTok? Live shows? Or somewhere else?

Take a moment to map your current points of discovery.

For independent artists, knowing where fans first find you is tremendously important.

Invitation – Guide them to stay connected

When someone discovers you, what happens next?

  • Do they know where to go?
  • Is there a clear place to stay connected?

If not, write one sentence you could start using.

For example:

“If you want to stay close to my creative world, join my small email list.“

A simple, clear invitation can make a huge difference in turning listeners into a loyal fan base.

Connection – Make the first meaningful interaction

What’s something you’d send to someone who just found you?

  • A short welcome story
  • A behind-the-song note
  • A quick update on your creative process

This becomes your first connection point.

The moment where your audience starts to feel like they’re part of your world.

Return – Encourage them to come back

What’s one small thing you could share that would encourage someone to return?

  • A monthly update
  • A list of inspirations
  • Behind-the-scenes moments from your week

This is especially helpful if you’re already sending monthly emails.

Final Thoughts

The beauty of creating a flywheel for independent artists is that it turns discovery into loyal, supportive relationships – all without overwhelming you.

Here’s a question for you to reflect on:

Where does your flywheel slow down?

If you feel like sharing, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Just hit comment – happy to read you!
