Building Relationships in the Music Industry w/ Lucy Woolley

Podcast · January 1, 2026

In this episode, music industry expert Lucy Wolley talks about how meaningful artist careers are built through intentional relationships.

How many times have you heard this?

“Building relationships in the music industry is the key”

I bet you’re quite familiar with that statement.

People talk about it constantly, and honestly, I believe it too.

I always have.

Even now, I don’t think there’s anything more powerful than two people choosing to commit to an art-centred, soul-led relationship.

But like me, you’ve probably asked yourself at some point, or maybe you still are:

What does “relationship building” actually mean in the music industry?

One thing that really helped me understand this more clearly came from Steve Chandler’s book: 50 ways to create great relationships.

It offered me eye-opening reflections that changed the way I think about relationships in my work.

One above all: if you want any industry connection to succeed, take ownership of its relationship.

Which means, living an artistic life where fan or music industry relationships are a creation of yours.

Just like you create music, you create music industry relationships; you don’t simply react.

Think about it.

Fans come from the same spiritual place your art comes from.

You find each other because the relationship itself is something you’re creating, not because you’re just reacting to someone’s mood, expectations, or messages.

You take ownership.

In other words, you connect, you check in, you ask for feedback, you speak to people the way you would your closest friends.

You genuinely create a long-term exchange that doesn’t end after the first message.

When you’re creating, you’re not reacting, and that’s how the phrase “Building relationships” starts to flourish.

And sometimes we forget that we all have access to this way of being.

That’s why I was very happy to invite Lucy onto the podcast to explore this topic through a real-life artist example, not just theory.
