A journey into Afrocentric music w/ Dj Khalab

Podcast · October 15, 2022

In this blog article, I’ll discuss black and Afrocentric Music with Italian afro-futurist producer, radio host and DJ Khalab.

Jazz:Re:Found festival has been a wonderful wave of uplifting conversations. This time, I sat down with a great multi-talented and eclectic artist.

Raffaele Costantino is a passionate researcher and lover of Africo centric music. Besides being the presenter of the Musical Box programme on Rai Radio 2 and a music producer (with the moniker Dj Khalab), his name stage tells a lot about him and shows his connection to African Rhythms.

“Electronic, African, Jazz. The real mission is to make an original mix between of all these things.”

Raffaele Costantino aka Dj Khalab

Without a doubt, I can say that Khalab’s Music is the vision that imagines the Africa of the future, made of several cultures that come into contact and create a fast-paced musical journey: techno, afrobeat, mail, griot, cumbia, rumba, hip-hop.

The same goes for M’berra, a collaborative album with a collective of Malian musicians From the M’berra Refugee Camp in Southeast Mauritania, shining a light on the Tuareg traditions and sharing stories about voices, songs and instruments.

“I want to tell a story with your music.”

Raffaele Costantino aka Dj Khalab

In addition to being a Dj, producer, and Radio Host, Raffaele is also a music consultant.

Among the collaborations, Jazz:Re:Found means a lot to him: the festival is set on research and development in the Afrocentric field – a cross between black, African, and African-American Music – which is his creative force.

In today’s interview, Dj Khalab talks about Afrocentric Music starting from his route into club culture, black Music’s influence on popular culture, the sound of Afro-Futurism, to Khalab and M’berra Ensamble – a visionary trip for a new language of storytelling.

Enjoy the chat! I hope you like it 😊
