In today’s episode, I have the pleasure of talking about Record Culture with Karl Henkell.
Karl is the founding editor of Record Culture Magazine: a bi-annual publication that focuses on niche music communities worldwide and their intersection with the worlds of art, fashion and culture.
In particular, each issue brings voice to DJs, musicians, and vinyl collectors who share their passion for music but also their struggles and challenges they face as creative artists.
The idea for the Magazine was born in New York back in 2015 – the right place at the right time.
And after one year of browsing music magazines – going to stores like McNelly Jackson in Soho daily – he noticed that something was missing.
At the same time, he soon realised the great opportunity in front of him.
“For a long time I had this idea, and I just felt like if I don’t do it, someone else will.”
Karl Henkell
He started Record Culture in 2016. And after six years, it became a well-known printed publication worldwide showcasing the life of people involved in music.
Also, you can find the Record Store in Berlin Kreuzberg, a place where you can browse a collection of merch as well as offerings by special guests.
In today’s interview, Karl talks about his journey, the magazine and the community behind it in Berlin – his new home.
